It's Monday and we have had a birthday!

A certain little boy who lives around here turned eight on Friday. We celebrated by having some friends sleep over on Friday, and then celebrating with the family on Saturday (Pokemon-style).

Sunday was all about taking it easy and recuperating before the start of another week. There was a lot of reading for everyone, a little time with the ipad, and then the kids got out the markers and worked on making their own books for a while.

You want to know about books, you say? Alrighty then. Accidental Saints was wonderful. I get all the Nadia Bolz-Weber love now. I suspect that book, as well as her previous book Pastrix, will be finding a home on my shelves soon. Also, I finally finished reading Bonhoeffer! It's a great biography and I think Metaxas does a really good job of presenting a man who was determined to do good and a nation torn between several bad choices.

Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy    Accidental Saints: Finding God in All the Wrong People

This week, I'm back to fiction. I plan to tackle Things Unsaid and the new Anthony Marra story collection The Tsar of Love and Techno

  3. Happy 8th birthday to that certain little boy. I'm wild about those cupcakes, yum!

I have the Marra on my shelf but I have to be in a very particular mood to read short stories. Maybe I'll bust it out for the next readathon :D

    Have a great week!

    1. Thanks, Julie. Every time I think he is so big, he does something that makes him seem like a little boy still. It's a strange juxtaposition!

  8. Funny - we had a Pokemon birthday party for my son's 5th birthday, 16 years ago! Amazing it is still popular with kids...though I shouldn't be surprised. My son and his friends still play the Pokemon video games...at 21 years old! Love the Pokeball cookies!

What a nice variety of books! I really want to read Marra's latest, too.

    1. It's funny which things seem to come back around. I have to confess, I missed the craze the first time and still don't really understand them all! It makes the little guy happy though. :)

    1. Good to hear! Sometimes the transition from novel to short story isn't quite as smooth as we hope.

  11. Loved the pic of your kids working on their own books. That is priceless. A belated hau'oli la hanau to him. Glad he had a happy battle of a birthday. Pikachu is my ultimate favorite Pokemon. My girls are into the cards and books.

    1. Thanks Stefanie! Both of my kids love Pokemon, although the little one might love it because her big brother does...

  12. Sounds like your eldest had a great birthday - those cakes look yummy!

How did you find reading so much non fiction in November? Non fiction is something I do want to read more of but never make the time for.

    Happy Reading!

    1. I like reading nonfiction. I go into it realizing that it is going to take me longer than reading a novel, and I try to read some fiction or short stories at the same time.

    1. I like the premise of Things Unsaid. There are so many of us in the middle of life, with both parents and kids who need care. It's nice to see the topic in both fiction and nonfiction!
